Student Records Found in Field

March 22, 2011- The Killeen Independent School District has begun looking into what it calls an “unfortunate incident” that involved documents containing social security numbers and other sensitive data being disposed of in a field near Ellison High School.

“KISD takes the protection of student and employee information very seriously,” KISD spokeswoman Leslie Gilmore said. “It’s something we pride ourselves on and we want to make sure we protect that. This is an unfortunate incident that will be thoroughly investigated and the proper action taken.”

The organization stated it has no policy specifically requiring shredding—demonstrating that in the absence of written policies and procedures, employees often make mistakes that expose organizations to, at the very least, unwanted media scrutiny.
